At the 81st Venice Film Festival in September 2024, the documentary prizes went to a striking, adventurous set of films that pushed the form far beyond the talking-head conventions of network television, embracing the essay film, the personal archive and the experimental.
The winners and contenders alike treated documentary as a laboratory: some built films entirely from home movies and surveillance footage, others dissolved the line between document and fiction, and still others used animation and performance to tell stories for which no footage existed. The festival’s willingness to champion such work signalled where the form was heading.

The Venice line-up was read by critics as proof that documentary, once the poor relation of the film world, had become its most adventurous wing. Its filmmakers were asking not only what the world was, but how a camera could ever do it justice, and the answers they found were reshaping what audiences expected from the real.
