What was meant to be a signing ceremony became one of the most extraordinary diplomatic blow-ups in modern memory. On 28 February 2025, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived at the White House to sign a deal granting the US access to Ukraine’s mineral resources, but inside the Oval Office he was confronted by President Trump and Vice President JD Vance in a televised argument that left aides stunned.

Vance accused Zelensky of being ungrateful and disrespectful, while Trump told the Ukrainian leader he was gambling with World War Three and had no cards. Zelensky, who had spent three years winning support by appealing to American audiences, defended his country and his diplomacy, but the meeting collapsed within an hour, the minerals deal unsigned and the two leaders’ joint press conference cancelled.

The scene, broadcast live, was a turning point in the transatlantic alliance. European leaders rushed to back Zelensky, and Trump’s tone toward Moscow shifted further toward accommodation even as he paused military aid to Ukraine. Weeks later, under intense pressure, Zelensky accepted a revised ceasefire proposal, but the trust shattered in that room would not be easily rebuilt.
